Whatever was going on in Raymond Scott’s mind, there was a clear disconnect in his activity. The succession of inventions and patents was matched by a bewildering array of corporate identities: Manhattan Research Inc; The Electronium Corporation; The Jingle Workshop; The World of Sound; Raymond Scott Enterprises. Yet for all that he hardly sold a thing. It’s as if there was a constant need to move from one idea to another without bringing any to fruition. Attempts at marketing were made, but they don’t ring true. A World of Sound product line brochure is a marvel of disjuncture.109 It announces an electronic bicycle bell at $7.95, and a top of the range Electronium at $4,950. Who was this price list for, you wonder, and was it ever circulated?

In late 1965, when Scott’s second marriage ended, he moved his studio from Manhasset to an industrial complex called Willow Park Center, Farmingdale, Long Island. There it occupied one huge room. He married for a third time and continued to work on his inventions and a dwindling number of advert commissions. A last big commercial opportunity came his way when the President of Motown, Berry Gordy, enquired about the Electronium.
